The goal of this program is to improve access to and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables for up to 150 vulnerable patients and their families who identify as low-income and/or people of color participating in the Broadlawns Diabetic Management Program.
The program will impact families. When it comes to food, it is critical to impact the unit, not just the individual. Studies show that obesity, and the many other health issues that accompany it, is a household issue and requires a solution that includes behavior changes with family. In Iowa, 15-17% of children and adolescents are obese. Childhood obesity is highest in the lowest income groups. Causes of obesity are multifactorial but if one parent is obese, a child has a 50% chance of being obese, with two parents, the children have an 80% chance.
